PG&E National Energy Group
PG&E National Energy Group hired M+M to assist with the siting of
a full-load, 510 megawatt power plant - the first plant to be built in
San Diego County in nearly three decades.
Objectives:
· Establish and increase awareness of need for more electrical power
production in the region
· Establish PG&E National Energy Group as the company to bring
more electrical power production to the region
· Provide a project comfort level for all stakeholder and interested
parties
· Secure approval for the project from the California Energy Commission.
Actions:
· Secured meetings with legislators at the local, state and federal levels
and to introduce and update the project, particularly in light of California's electrical
restructuring issues
· Assisted with region-wide community outreach meetings and forums between PG&E
National Energy group and consumer and environmental group leaders, community and
business organizations, to provide progress updates
· Developed and executed a $65,000 advertising campaign
· Assisted with public meetings and forums, both regulatory and those initiated by
PG&E National Energy Group
· Procured earned media and opinion editorials
Results:
· Obtained project support or neutrality, from virtually all community, business,
labor, environmental and consumer groups
· Obtained widespread political support including a 5-0 vote by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors
· Obtained unanimous approval by California Energy Commission in May 2001
· Obtained positive and widespread print, broadcast and electronic media coverage
